Disposition: - Compassionate: Aoba is a kind person at his core, he doesn't intentionally try to hurt anyone's feelings outside of the occasional banter or light teasing. He's a true Good Samaritan that will drop what he's doing to help someone in need, even if this isn't in his favor, which is specifically called out in Noiz' route as a counterpoint to Noiz' transactional approach to relationships. This compassion even extends to things that are not considered 'alive' in his world, such as artificial intelligence. - Tolerant: As evidenced by the company he keeps, Aoba can hang with just about anyone, prefering to get to know the person beneath whatever exterior or facade they present, rather than judge them by appearances alone -- in short, he's non-judgmental. For example: Aoba considers Trip and Virus to be his friends, despite their criminal connections and appears to overlook their obviously obsessive tendencies. Likewise, he seems to overlook Mink's criminal background even after he was kidnapped by him. - Immature: Aoba doesn't always act his age, he will puff out his cheeks and whine or argue under his breath in a way that sounds more like a petulant brat than a grown-ass adult. He will express childlike wonder, ooh and aah’ing with youthful amazement, most notably in the Noiz drama CD when he goes on his first airplane ride and explores the city. Sly Blue tends to be more impulsive, goading people and starting fights for minor or imagined offenses to satisfy his desires. - Compelling: His abnormally developed vocal chords combined with his personality allows him to convince or coerce with relative ease. For example, he convinces Noiz and others to assist him in rescuing Granny from Mizuki, even going so far as to use his ability Scrap to get them to stop bickering amongst themselves. Sometimes his attractive voice can be a drawback, however, especially when obsessive types are drawn to his voice. Aoba seems to be aware that he has this effect on people, and isn't above using it to manipulate creepy customers by upselling them on products they don't need. - Broken: As revealed in Ren's route, Aoba had an incident years ago. Back then, he was an avid gamer of Rhyme who had recognized he had a power which he used to exploit his opponents. This ability, Scrap, allowed him to control and destroy the minds of other players. He only considered abandoning the life of a violent delinquent after his behavior caused Granny to cry. The resulting mental breakdown and hospitalization that followed caused him to have a limited form of amnesia, and his mind was broken into distinctive personalities, developing a form of dissociative identity disorder. When Aoba emerged from his hospitalization, he was determined to be as well behaved as he could be.
Under pressure: - Bad End: Aoba was captured by Trip and Virus. At the hands of these two, his 'fans', he suffered greatly. He was tortured, left in the dark and chained to the floor for what could have been for at least a day if not more, only to be cleaned up and tortured some more. His existance was one of misery and violation. He's obviously traumatized by his experience, and will be grateful to know of this world's hardline stance about consent. Sly Blue will only care about the rules only as far as it would be a pain if he was caught not abiding by them. - Rejection of self: As mentioned before, Aoba is resolved to deny the part of him that caused Granny to cry, so he suppresses the violent Sly Blue . As a result, he flinches away from more explicit situations and feels embarrassed by intimacy. This can pose a challenge when it comes to synching, but it's not impossible. It just takes some warming up. Sly Blue, on the other hand, is down to clown if it suits him. - Sly Blue's Resentment: Rejection hurts. Sly Blue deeply resents Aoba for not accepting him as a part of himself. Over time, he's grown more frustrated and his impulses turn more extreme as he continues to struggle for control over Aoba's body as the dominant personality. This constant battering degrades Aoba's mental state resulting in increasingly debilitating headaches. In DMMD, when Aoba starts to lose control, Sly Blue urges him to 'destroy, destroy, destroy'. Sly Blue understands that violence is illegal, so he will have to find other ways to satisfy those destructive impulses... likely with like-minded individuals.
Condition upon arrival: Dehydrated, low blood sugar from extended period of neglect of one day. Considering he's coming from one of his Bad Endings and the TDM, Aoba will be very relieved to be in even an unfamiliar place, although paranoid about being caught again by Trip and Virus. Anyone resembling either of the two will be avoided if possible, but other than being jumpy, he's cautiously optimistic.
Abilities: - Scrap: At it’s lightest version, Aoba’s unique vocal chords can allow him to convince or even control others into doing what he says by speaking. For example, early in canon he regularly uses this to get difficult customers to buy more products from him. Later, when his companions are arguing amongst themselves, he yells at them to stop using Scrap and they immediately fall silent. Heavier versions include single-word commands that cause damage or incapacity (e.g. Uttering the word “fall” and the hearer collapses). The most powerful use of Scrap involves Aoba reaching into another person's mind (or numerous people) to render unconscious, put into a coma or kill, but Aoba tends to use only to repair psychological/mental damage to someone. Other Aoba more readily uses this ability to disable, control or kill others. This ability is poorly defined in canon — generally described like overwriting a hard drive — and is used as a plot device. It's available to other players if they wish to have an opportunity to remove mental blocks that result in physical changes (personality or physically) that would otherwise be impossible to change. However, in order to be successful with this use of Scrap, Aoba must know them well enough to navigate their mindscape without doing damage. Examples: Noiz' CIP condition miraculously disappears after a successful Scrap, Koujaku's and Mink's intentions for suicide are changed for the better, and Ren inhabits the body of Aoba's twin brother to become a real boy in the world's most bizarre Pinocchio story. I leave any nerfing up to the mods!
- Unusually Developed Vocal Chords: This is more of a physical trait than a skill, but Aoba is frequently complimented (or becomes the subject of obsession) for his voice. His genetically modified vocal chords appear to effectively have a passive ‘attraction effect’ that some people respond strongly to, to the point of unhealthy obsession. Basically, up to player discretion how effective this is.
- Cybernetics/Robotics: More of a skill than a power but might be relevant. He is a natural at repairing complex machines, requiring only some old manuals he found in the trash and using ‘older tech’ to run diagnostics. He’s self-taught, so formal training or apprenticeship would actually make him more effective.
- Self Defense: He might be scrawny looking, but he can hold his own in a street fight, with punches and kicks, mostly fighting dirty. He’s not trained in martial arts or anything special.
Inventory: - The clothes on his back (lucky him)
Gembond: Sapphire Gem Location: Nestled in the center of his collarbone at the base of his neck.
